Calm Dome Photos

June 19, 2007

Colin Leipelt sent me a flickr link to some photos he took of our ongoing Calm Dome installation at the Urban Culture Project Space.

Entrance
This is the 12th Street entrance to the space.

Approach
Here is the first inside glance at some of the propaganda posters that Seth Johnson designed. Note the detail of the arrangement of the kiosks and floor decor to portray the Carnal Torpor sigil.

Side View
Here is an alternate view that allows a better sight of the Calm Dome.

A close up of the Calm Dome.

Calm Dome Closed
Here is a rear view of the Calm Dome, with some more of Seth’s awesome drawings.

Calm Dome Opened
Here is a second rear view to show how the Calm Dome opens up to allow visitors to experience equilibriation.

Inside of the dome are two speakers which play a binaural drone-scape that is dictated by the position of outside gallery goers to the ultrasonic sensors installed beneath each of 6 graphite drawings.

Beneath each of the drawing are also audio speakers that play various multichannel audio tracks composed by Ashley Miller. These are subtly modulated based upon the sensor data. The sensors are connected to an arduino microcontroller and sent to Pure Data for processing and playing the audio.

I programmed the arduino and Pd software, as well as collaborated with Ashley on the basic format for the audio tracks and interactions, which he then produced. He also did most of the wiring/soldering! Seth Johnson provided the visual tone of the installation, and the dome itself was constructed by Colin Leipelt. You can view the rest of the flickr stream here.

We are going to do a video walkthrough of the installation to provide more documentation of the audio and interactive side of things. I’ll post it here when it is ready. The show is still going on, so see it first hand if you can make it!
